The Psalm of the still far away Prodigal soul

Solitary man looking into a lake at dusk

I was just cleaning and organizing this area of the garage for the first time in years… my friend was pulling everything out of each compartment. And then I saw a familiar handwriting on the back of a hotel invoice. I was about to throw it on the trash bag but the Precious Holy Spirit placed in my mind the thought of just reading it before throwing it. It doesn’t have a title but I humbly think it could be titled, the psalm of the still far away prodigal soul. I think after you read it, you’ll know why… Would you please join me in praying for the prodigals in our midst? The Father is eagerly waiting for them to come back… Shouldn’t we also be eagerly waiting in the hope of what Jesus is doing for them as well?

You are hope, when there’s none.
You give us peace in the middle of wars.
You provide light in the darkest night.
You bring salvation when all is lost,
You extend mercy when we don’t deserve it.
You awake us when we sleep deep,
You awake us from deep sleep to save us from ourselves.
You believe in us even when we do not believe in ourselves.
You encourage us when all forsake us.
You grant wisdom to the fool,
And take away wisdom from the wise.
You withhold your sword for the sake of mercy,
You do not strike when we curse.
You give me mercy without pounds.
You give me love I cannot comprehend.
You purify my character with sorrow,
but treat my heart with joy.
You go with me wherever I decide to go.
You are faithful to me unto death,
yet my faith cannot even be seen.
You give me life, yet I want the world.
You teach me love, but I learn hate.
You give me peace but I destroy it.
I destroy my life yet You are the object of my blame.
You open doors but I close them,
You close doors but I try to open them.
You not only knock, but help me to open the door.
You are there before I close my eyes,
and You are there when I open them.
You watch me when I sleep, waiting to awake me.
You pay my debts without objection,
yet I reject you.

Written by a soul temporarily estranged from his Father

Dear Heavenly Father

Thank you for bringing to our attention the pressing need to intercede for the ones that once called You Father. Thank you for reminding us of Your amazing love for each of your children whether they have left Your company to pursue their desires, or they are still within Your House but don’t know You for who You really are. We come to you humbly recognizing our need of the continued work of Your Holy Spirit in our lives. Be with every prodigal son and daughter, hold them close to you. Teach us how to love them best and most of all, continue reminding us that whether they are still in our lives or not, You are. And we can, and should pray for them with hearts full of faith and hope. We place them and ourselves in Your mighty right Hand. Please wash us all with the Precious merits of the blood of Jesus.
